Types and Levels of Accreditation

Some program areas or schools in general are possibly equipped by some kind of accreditation.

One may find accrediting agencies of two types specifically, the national and regional level or specialized accreditation.

Institutional - Institutional accreditation agencies review the standards of an institution on the whole. These agencies are broken down in two sub categories, national or regional.
• National accrediting agencies look at institutions within their country of domain.
Most of the nationally accredited institutions are those that operate for profit. Many religious Christianity based or career-based accreditors are categorized as national accreditors.
• Regional accrediting agencies review only schools in a specific geographic area which can also be out of their domain of existence.

The regional accrediting criteria is older compared to the national accrediting system and is mostly used by traditional brick and mortar colleges and universities.

Regionally accredited institutions are often considered more effectively utilized by schools. This is not a usual case but can be important to consider if you are looking forward to transferring your traditional school or program in future to advanced degrees in the future, such as distance learning modules. It is possible that an institution acquires both national and regional accreditation.

The objectives of the two are almost the same - to provide declaration of an essential level of excellence.
Specialized - Specialized accrediting organizations focus on measuring program-level quality regardless of the geographic location or nonprofit/for-profit status.
Each of these accreditors is focused on a particular field of study, major or concentration.
